Best Time to Visit Egypt
Best Time to Visit Egypt: Month-by-Month Guide | Unut Travel
Egypt is a year-round destination, but the weather changes a lot between the Nile Valley, the desert and the Red Sea coast. Choosing the right month can mean the difference between a comfortable sunrise at Karnak and a sweltering midday walk. Here is how to plan.
The short answer
For most travelers, the best time to visit Egypt is October to April. Days are warm and sunny, evenings are pleasant, and temple sites in Luxor and Aswan are comfortable to explore. December to February is the coolest and busiest period. If you want fewer crowds and still like warm weather, October, November and March are excellent.
Season by season
October to November: warm and golden. The summer heat eases, the light is beautiful and the Nile cruise season is in full swing. It is one of the most comfortable times for Cairo, Luxor and Aswan together.
December to February: cool and busy. Daytime temperatures are mild in the Nile Valley and cooler in Cairo and Alexandria, with a little rain possible along the coast. This is peak season, so book flights, hotels and cruises well in advance. In the desert, nights can be cold, so bring warm layers.
March to April: spring warmth. Days get hotter, yet it is still very comfortable for sightseeing. In spring, Egypt can see khamsin, a hot wind that carries dust, so some days may be hazy.
May to September: hot. In Luxor and Aswan, daytime temperatures are often well above 40°C (104°F). Sightseeing is still possible with very early starts and a break in the middle of the day, and it is the quietest season with lower prices. Many travelers choose this period for the Red Sea or Alexandria instead.
Best time by destination
- Cairo and Giza: October to April is most comfortable. In summer, visit the pyramids early in the morning.
- Luxor and Aswan: October to March is ideal for the temples and the Valley of the Kings.
- Nile cruise: October to April, when the days are warm and the evenings on deck are pleasant.
- Abu Simbel: Cooler months make the early start and long road or flight much easier.
- Bahariya and the White Desert: October to April. Winter nights can be very cold, so pack warm clothes for camping.
- Red Sea (Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh): Good almost all year. Winter is mild for beach days, and summer is hot but great for diving and snorkeling.
- Alexandria: Pleasant in spring and autumn, and cooler and breezier than Cairo in summer.
Ramadan and holidays
Ramadan moves about eleven days earlier each year. During this month most sights stay open, but some restaurants are closed in the daytime and opening hours can change. Evenings are lively and atmospheric. Christmas and New Year are the busiest and most expensive weeks of the year, so reserve early.
Combining Egypt with Jordan
If you are adding Petra and Wadi Rum, spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) work well for both countries.
Practical tips
- Start sightseeing early. Mornings are cooler, quieter and better for photos.
- Wear sun protection, a hat and comfortable shoes in every season.
- With a private tour, your guide can adjust the day to avoid the hottest hours.
