Egypt and Jordan Itinerary: How to Combine Both in 12 to 14 Days
Egypt and Jordan sit close together and complement each other well. Egypt brings the pyramids, temples and the Nile. Jordan adds the rose-red city of Petra, the desert of Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea. With flights between Cairo and Amman taking under two hours, combining them in one trip is easy.
Sample 14-day route
- Days 1 to 3, Cairo and Giza: the pyramids, the Sphinx, the Egyptian Museum and old Cairo.
- Day 4: fly to Luxor and visit Karnak and Luxor Temple.
- Days 5 to 7, Nile cruise: Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae as you sail to Aswan.
- Day 8, Aswan and Abu Simbel: the temples of Ramses II.
- Day 9: fly to Cairo and onward to Amman.
- Days 10 and 11, Petra: walk through the Siq to the Treasury and explore the tombs, theater and high viewpoints.
- Day 12, Wadi Rum: a jeep tour through the red desert, and an optional night in a desert camp.
- Day 13, Dead Sea: float and relax before departure.
- Day 14: depart from Amman.
If you have fewer days, shorten the Nile section or choose a seven-day Egypt and Petra tour. If you prefer a beach rest, add a few nights in Sharm El Sheikh.
When to go
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best months for both countries. Petra and Luxor are very hot in summer, and Wadi Rum can be cold at night in winter.
Practical tips
- Check visa requirements for your passport before you book, as they depend on your nationality.
- Allow at least one and a half days for Petra. The site is large and involves a lot of walking, so wear comfortable shoes.
- Keep one flexible day in case of weather or flight changes.
- A private guide in each country makes transfers and sightseeing much smoother.
